    International Control Converges on Fusion Energy Startups

    International control of fusion technologies is not as prominently spotlighted as that of fission reactor technologies—but that does not mean it is irrelevant. Compliance procedures for fusion reactors are generally more straightforward than for fission-based nuclear power plants. However, fusion ventures are entering new regulatory terrain, which introduces uncertainty. Meeting international obligations will need to be demonstrated in national licensing applications.     Global inventory of Cs-137 from nuclear tests

    The total activity of 137Cs discharged into the atmosphere by all 535 atmospheric nuclear explosions was around 1018 Bq. This is much more than from the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents. For Fukushima, the amount of 137Cs released is estimated to be 1.2 × 1016 Bq and this is about 14% of the emission estimated for the Chernobyl accident (Steinhauser et al., 2014). Some of the 137Cs inventory in the environment has already decayed but the half-life of 30.04 years implies that a large portion persists. Today’s remaining ¹³⁷Cs inventory from atmospheric nuclear tests is on the order of 2–3 × 1017 Bq. A more precise estimate will be determined by a project…

    Exploring Atmospheric Nuclear Tests

    Radionuclides released by nuclear test are still widely abundant in the environment and biosphere. Most releases were caused by the nuclear atmospheric test. The last one was conducted by the People’s Republic of China on October 16, 1980. It was the last known atmospheric detonation before the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was negotiated in from 1993 to 1996.     Record Tritium Production for Nuclear Weapons

    In January 2026, the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced the achievement of a significant milestone in completing a record amount of tritium produced for nuclear weapons. Tritium is used in nuclear weapons to boost the yield of the fission material of the primary stage. A mixture of tritium and deuterium gas is injected into the pit just before the nuclear chain reaction starts. Fission energy causes tritium and deuterium to fuse and create additional neutrons. Due to its 12.3-year half-life, tritium decays radioactively at the rate of 5.5 percent each year and must be replenished periodically in the warhead’s reservoir.     How to do the Decay Correction Properly

    Our paper examines isotopic activity ratios of radionuclides detected at radionuclide stations within the International Monitoring System (IMS) for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). We focus on characterizing release events from underground nuclear explosions by analyzing radionuclide concentrations in air plumes sampled by IMS stations. The study investigates decay correction during sampling, using two approaches: interval constant concentration and decaying concentration. Our findings highlight the impact of these methods on isotopic activity ratios, particularly for radionuclides with short half-lives.
